Wi-Fi Not Reaching Every Room? Fix It Before You Buy More Equipment
Weak signal in the bedroom is usually about where the router sits, not how fast your package is. Try these steps first.
Many people pay for a faster internet package when the real problem is where the router sits. Wi-Fi is radio, and walls, floors and metal all weaken it. Try these free fixes before you spend money.
1. Move the router to the middle
Routers pushed into a corner or a cupboard send half their signal into the outside wall. Put it near the centre of the home, up on a shelf, in the open.
2. Keep it away from interference
Microwaves, cordless phones and thick concrete walls all hurt the signal. A router behind the TV is rarely the best spot.
3. Check the cable, not just the Wi-Fi
If a desktop, TV or shop till is near the router, connect it with a network cable. A wired device runs faster and leaves more Wi-Fi for everyone else.
4. Know when to add a second device
If a far room still has no signal, a second access point or router connected by cable to the first is better than a cheap repeater. For long runs, Cat 6 cable is sold by the metre.
5. Fibre customers
If your line comes in through an ONT or XPON router, the box usually sits where the fibre enters the house, which is often not the centre. Moving the Wi-Fi, not the fibre, is the fix.
