How to Choose a Refurbished Laptop in Kenya: A 10-Point Checklist

A refurbished laptop can save you a lot of money, as long as you check the right things. Here is what to look at before you pay.

A good refurbished laptop gives you business-grade hardware for far less than a new one. A bad one costs you twice. The difference is almost always in the checks you make before you pay. Use this list whether you buy from us or anywhere else.

1. Decide what the laptop is for

Browsing, Word, Excel and video calls need far less than video editing or engineering software. Write down your three most demanding tasks first. Everything else on this list follows from them.

2. Look at the processor generation, not just "Core i5"

"Core i5" has been sold for more than a decade. A newer generation is faster, uses less battery and stays supported longer. For everyday work, aim for a recent enough generation that Windows 11 is officially supported.

3. Get at least 8GB of RAM

Web browsers and office apps are hungry. 8GB is a sensible minimum today, and 16GB gives you room to keep many tabs and a few programs open. Check whether the RAM can be upgraded later.

4. Insist on an SSD

A solid-state drive makes a laptop start in seconds and open programs quickly. A laptop with an old spinning hard drive will feel slow whatever its processor.

5. Ask about battery health

Batteries wear out, and refurbished laptops are used ones. Ask how long it lasts on a charge now, not when it was new, and what happens if the battery is weak.

6. Test the screen, keyboard and trackpad

Look for dead pixels, yellow patches, flicker and uneven backlight. Press every key. Run your finger over the trackpad and click both buttons.

7. Check the ports and the camera

Plug something into every USB port, try HDMI if you need it, and open the webcam and microphone. These are small repairs for a shop but annoying for you.

8. See the condition grade, and what it means

Sellers grade how a laptop looks. A lower grade can mean scratches or marks on the case while the machine still works perfectly. Cosmetic wear is a good way to pay less, as long as the grade is honest.

9. Get the warranty in writing

Find out how long it lasts, what it covers and who you contact. At Daylink, refurbished laptops carry a 2-month performance warranty covering manufacturing defects (see our Terms). Physical damage is not covered.

10. Know how you can pay and who you are buying from

Buy from a seller with a real shop, phone numbers you can call and a clear return policy. Pay through a traceable method such as M-Pesa and keep the receipt.
